TOWNSHIP OF BRUCE
MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING HELD ON JUNE 11, 2009
The regular meeting of the Bruce Township Board was held on June 11, 2009 at the Bruce Township Hall with board members Marsh, Avery, LaJoie and Rogers present. Absent Sawyers. Also in attendance were 5 township residents. The Supervisor called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Public Comments: There were no comments.
The minutes of the regular meeting held on May 14, 2009 and the Special Meeting held on May 13, 2009 were presented. Motion was made by Avery, seconded by Rogers to approve the minutes as presented. All were in favor, motion carried.
Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Avery to pay the bills. Checks # 5564 through # 5614 were presented for a total of $ 49,039.87. All were in favor, motion carried.
County Commission Report: County Commissioner, Don McLain was present to report on some of the things happening in the County. There has been a board appointed to help continue the Upper Peninsula State Fair. A new sound system has been installed in the Circuit Court. He gave us a summary of things going on at the County. There will be an open house for the addition to the County Jail on Saturday, June 20, 2009.
Reports of Special Meetings: There were no special meetings.
Zoning Administrator: There have been 12 permits issued. There were 5 for new homes.
Planning Commission: There was no meeting held in June.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurers report was read. The balance of all funds is $753,499.19. Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Avery to accept the Treasurers report as presented. Motion carried.
Clerk’s Report: We received a letter from Gillett, Halverson and Lenhardt to do our audit this summer. The cost is $2,150.00. The increase in cost is because of additional fraud procedure now required to be performed. Motion was made by LaJoie, seconded by Avery to hire Gillett, Halverson and Lenhardt to do our audit for $2,150.00. All were in favor, motion carried.
Firemen’s Report: There were no fires this month. There are two new members joining the Department that have already been trained.
Grounds and Park Report: They recently had a meeting to discuss the ball field and purchased some new basketballs and volley balls and are purchasing a volley ball net.
Old Business: The rock fence is in place at Dunbar Park.
The back stop is in place for the ball field. When it dries up work will continue.
The new roof on the Township Hall is in the process of being done.
The brine on the roads was finished today.
New Business: Heritage Days will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the Bruce Township Hall.
Chippewa County Road has contacted the Township in regard to doing some black topping. Rob Laitinen suggested Nicolet Rd. from 6 Mile to 8 Mile. If it is blacktopped now, it will save on the expense later on. The cost is $135,150.00 for two miles. Discussion followed. Motion was made by Marsh, seconded by Rogers to sign a contract with Chippewa County Road Commission to blacktop Nicolet Rd. from 6 Mile Rd. to 8 Mile Rd. at a cost of $135,150.00. In favor, Marsh, Rogers and LaJoie. Opposed – Avery. Motion carried.
A new bridge will be built on M-129 between 11 Mile and 12 Mile.
Public Comments: Don McClain spoke on forming a Cemetery Board between Dafter, Soo and Bruce Townships. Discussion followed.
Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Avery to adjourn the meeting. All were in favor, motion carried. The Supervisor adjourned the meeting at 7:45 p.m.
